Empowering Women Parliamentary Workshop

On Saturday 29th September 2018, MWM arranged a workshop on “Your Parliament and its Workings”. This was advertised on Eventbrite and open to all women in the borough of Merton.

The workshop was led by Charlotte Dobson from “UK Parliament Education”. They provide an outreach service which was introduced by Merton Council’s Councillor for West Barnes, Hina Bokari.

Hina gave a very insightful and interesting introduction to how she recently became a Councillor. As a teacher, she was aware of the impact of education funding and decided to become more involved. She described the commitment and work required to be successful in the local elections. She explained how as residents, we could find our Councillor if we wanted to contact them.

Charlotte then explained how we can be involved with national government.

She briefly explained the Houses of Parliament, MPs and the House of Lords. We discussed “All Party Parliamentary Groups” (APPGs).

You can find your MP on https://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/. On this website people can write to their MP, look at their voting records and read speeches.

We discussed how you can influence your MPs by writing to them or meeting with them. Also, E-petitions are one way to influence parliament with 100,000 signatures or more. https://www.parliament.uk/get-involved/sign-a-petition/e-petitions/

We enjoyed further conversations over lunch, provided by “Parliament Education and Outreach Service”.
